Working at the HuC

In a variety of ways, nearly four hundred colleagues at the KNAW Humanities Cluster (HuC) collaborate on research in the Netherlands. Researchers, data and collections specialists, digital professionals, support staff, volunteers, and interns work for the IISG, the Huygens Institute, the Meertens Institute, DH Lab, NL-Lab, Operational Management, and Digital Infrastructure. They do so at two adjacent locations in downtown Amsterdam and at a site in Amsterdam-East. Whether you’re conducting research, making collections accessible, developing digital solutions, or supporting the organization: at HuC, you’ll make a valuable contribution to science that matters.

  • Working at the heart of Dutch science: Through your work, you contribute daily to research and knowledge development in the Netherlands and to societal impact.

Diverse and inclusive work environment

We work in various ways to create a work environment where people feel welcome and can be themselves. We do this not only through policy but also in practice, with concrete initiatives and resources.

  • We have a diversity and inclusion group that works on concrete plans and initiatives, such as raising awareness, improving inclusive recruitment and selection, and strengthening a work environment where everyone feels welcome.
  • We endorse NWO’s National Action Plan for Diversity and Inclusion and its Gender Equality Plan, and we are actively committed to achieving our goals in these areas.
  • We offer training sessions and workshops to strengthen knowledge and skills, such as bias training, inclusive recruitment and selection, active bystander training, and workshops on neurodiversity.
  • Our buildings feature facilities such as prayer rooms, quiet rooms, and lactation rooms. We are also working to make our buildings accessible; while this can be challenging due to our historic buildings, we provide accommodations where necessary.
  • We have a point of contact for transgender employees who need advice, support, or a confidential conversation, and we have a code of conduct for social safety that guides how we interact with one another.
